Australian Morris 850

Which way does the fan go?

Seemingly simple, yet often confused, the correct orientation of the radiator fan should not be overlooked.

Radiator fans should be fitted the correct way to maximise efficiency.
Radiator fans should be fitted the correct way to maximise efficiency.

The Morris 850 was originally produced with a 16-blade metal radiator fan, painted in bright yellow. Later Australian Mini models featured a refined 11 blade yellow plastic fan.

In either case, the fans are ‘sided’ and it is important that they are fitted the correct way to ensure the most efficient air movement.

A quick way to remember for either type is “rough side to radiator”.

  • For the 16 blade, the rough side is the one with the welded on portion.
  • For the 11 blade, the rough side is the one with the ribbed section.

The plastic 11 blade fans also have ‘ENGINE SIDE’ written on the smooth side that faces the engine.
